Early Years Foundation Stage

Reception – Classes 1 & 2

Welcome to Reception. Our team works closely together to ensure our provision is seamless and so that children in Shotton Hall are given rich and memorable opportunities to learning. The Early Years Team are, class teachers: Mrs Hutchinson & Miss Case and teaching assistants: Mrs Devine and Miss Pratt. Our partnership with you as parents/carers is incredibly important to us and by working together, we aim to offer your child the best start to their education.

Here at Shotton Hall Primary, our EYFS provision is made up of Pre-school and two Reception Classes. Children in Early Years will access bespoke education, which aims to meet the needs of all children and provide quality care to all. Our environment is carefully designed with the 7 Areas of Development and children’s fascinations at the forefront.

Autumn

In Autumn 1, we begin the year by getting to know each child through our ‘Super Duper You’ topic. This topic is perfect for helping the children settle into their new class and get to know their new friends too. We explore emotions and learn about our unique differences. In Autumn 2, we begin our ‘Traditional Tales’ topic where children will learn a variety of tales including ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘The Gingerbread Man’.

Spring

In Spring 1, we introduce the children to the ‘Amazing animals’ we share our planet with, past and present, including prehistoric dinosaurs! We then invite the children to ‘Come Outside’ during Spring 2 where we look at life cycles of plants and animals and have a go at growing our own plants and vegetables.

Summer

In Summer 1, the children will learn about different methods of transport in our ‘Ticket to ride’ topic including how and why we travel, our local community and the people who help us. In Summer 2, we end the year with ‘Fun at the seaside’ where children will discover all about the beach and sea life.

Timetable

In Reception, our main basis for learning is through play and exploration. However, we do offer discrete teaching sessions to ensure our children become successful, independent learners. We have chosen predictable themes and topics alongside texts that children may be interested in as a hook for our planning. Lots of our planning in Reception is ‘in the moment’, based on what our children are showing interest in or are curious about.
