Welcome to Class 11
We are a Year 5 class and our teacher is Mrs Gilmour and our teaching assistant is Mrs Parkin. We enjoy working hard and becoming confident learners who are excited by new challenges and opportunities.
Autumn
Our first topic answers the question, ‘How did women’s, men’s and children’s experiences of WW2 differ?’ In this topic we will learn about World War 2, focusing on the differing experiences of men, women and children during this time.Our Independent Learning Project with focus on street art, how it can be created and exploring different mediums. Topics we will consider in science include: Why are some living things endangered?’ and ‘How can we change the sounds we hear?’ In our English lessons we will be making links between our reading and writing, using extracts, short stories and longer novels including, ‘Rose Blanche’ by Ian Mcewan and ‘Carries War’ by Nina Bawden.
Spring
‘Sky Hawk’ by Gill Lewis will be our main novel in English, during which we will consider the importance of wildlife and form persuasive letters that will be sent to our local MP. Geography has links with our English and will include looking at the Ocean and conducting a fieldwork study enquiry regarding recycling.Our Spring History topic asks ‘What were the wonders of Ancient Egypt?’ Which will link to our Art and DT units, where we will be creating our own Canopic Jars. We will be working to research, design and make a Shaduf. focusing on how they were vital to Egyptians.
Summer
Our Summer topic is, Why are the Rainforests under threat and what is being done to protect them?’ which includes fieldwork and the use an eight-way thinking model to consider and answer questions about the region.During this term, we will use ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar as the main stimulus for our writing, producing a newspaper report and a narrative. Science is very exciting and includes the topic ‘Who would win Scientist X-Factor?’ which will allow for lots of experimenting! As part of our Cultural Capital, we will also experience Paddle Boarding and water sports at our local marina.
Useful Information
- Please ensure your child’s name is inside all of their uniform including PE kit and shoes.
- We use Class Dojo to set homework, award team points and communicate with parents. Please ensure you are signed up to Class Dojo using the parent code provided. For more information please click here.

- Teachers will update Class Dojo with details of your child’s PE day.
- Pupils should come to school appropriately dressed for P.E. in either school kit (red t-shirt, black shorts/leggings/trousers), or other suitable clothes including t-shirt, shorts or tracksuit bottoms that follow PE kit guidelines. Footwear can include plimsols, trainers or barefoot (depending on the suitability of the activity).
- All children must bring a water bottle from home and take it home at night to clean and refill- please ensure names are on all bottles.
- All children are provided with a red book bag which they should bring to school each day.
- Pupils are asked to read at least 3 times a week at home and should submit their reading diary via Class Dojo.
