Class 10 – Year 5

Welcome to Class 10!

We are a Year 5 class and our teacher is Mr Cleugh and our teaching assistant is Mrs Jones. We always try to work hard and have lots of fun. We thrive on challenges and always look for opportunities to learn and develop ourselves and support others.

Autumn

Our first topic answers the question, ‘How did women’s, men’s and children’s experiences of WW2 differ?’ In this topic we will learn about World War 2, focusing on the differing experiences of men, women and children during this time.

Our Independent Learning Project with focus on street art, how it can be created and exploring different mediums. Our main topic in science will be looking at the forces and how they affect us and the world around us.

In our English lessons we will be making links between our reading and writing, using extracts, short stories and longer novels including, ‘Rose Blanche’ by Ian Mcewan and ‘Carries War’ by Nina Bawden.

Spring

‘Sky Hawk’ by Gill Lewis will be our main novel in English, during which we will consider the importance of wildlife and form persuasive letters that will be sent to our local MP. Geography has links with our English and will include looking at the Ocean and conducting a fieldwork study enquiry regarding recycling.

Our Spring History topic asks ‘What were the wonders of Ancient Egypt?’ Which will link to our Art and DT units, where we will be creating our own Canopic Jars.  We will be working to research, design and make a Shaduf. focusing on how they were vital to Egyptians.

Summer

Our Summer topic is, Why are the Rainforests under threat and what is being done to protect them?’  which includes fieldwork and the use an eight-way thinking model to consider and answer questions about the region.

During this term, we will use ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar as the main stimulus for our writing, producing a newspaper report and a narrative.

Science is very exciting and will focus on looking at the Solar System!

As part of our Cultural Capital, we will also experience Paddle Boarding and water sports at our local marina.
