Class 3 – Year 1

Welcome to Class 3!

This is a Year 1 class. Our teacher is Mr Haygarth and Mrs Henry is our teaching assistant. We are so excited about all of the special things we’ll be doing in Year 1. We can’t wait to start learning how to use the laptops in our computing lessons and in music we’ll be learning to play a musical instrument!

Mr Haygarth and Mrs Henry are our Year 1 teachers in Class 3.  We enjoy working hard to allow each child to unlock their full potential.

Autumn

During our first term together we will begin by exploring our five senses during our Science lessons, moving on to investigate seasonal changes. We’re going to learn about the countries and capitals of the UK and identify some of our important landmarks. In our computing work we will concentrate on developing our keyboard skills. We will create our own puppets based on our class text in DT. In English we will look at cementing sentence structure and learning about traditional tales. In maths we will look at numbers to 10 and begin learning addition and subtraction.

Spring

Our Science work will focus on naming and describing materials while we discover why they can be useful for different purposes. This should help us design and make our own lunch containers during our DT lessons. In our History topic we shall learn facts about the Great Fire of London as well as looking at a local link of the Great Fire of Newcastle. Art we will explore colour mixing and look at paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. We’re also going to be using maps to identify hot and cold parts of the world and discover what it is like in these places.

Summer

During the summer term we will be investigating what grows in our school grounds as well as investigating different types of weather and will help record daily changes in the weather we experience. We’ll also be looking back into the past to find out about the Victorian age.  Our Art lessons will focus on the work of Kandinsky and we will use his art to inspire us to make our own artwork while our DT lessons will help us develop the skills to make some picnic food! Our music project will be our end of year whole school performance.
