Part A: Curriculum music
At Shotton Hall Primary School, music is an integral part of our school community and is used to encourage our pupils to express themselves creatively and be enjoyable.
Music can be seen across each key stage: Within EYFS, music is delivered through holistic practice as an integral part of early development and that musical development matters. Music is planned for every day and singing is integrated throughout the day. Pupils are given the opportunity to use instruments to create sounds and are continuously encouraged to explore music making. Pupils in KS1 and KS2 are taught by class teachers so aspects of learning can be revisited throughout the week. Following the Model Music Curriculum, Progression documents, accompanied by Charanga are used by class teachers, who are also supported by the music lead throughout each unit. Music continues to build learning in small, incremental steps. Pupils develop their playing with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression. Pupils in KS1 and KS2 have music lessons for an hour a week, alongside singing assemblies two per week.
Our school works closely with Durham Music Service, who provide instrument teaching to many of our year groups. EYFS received one hour per week in the Summer Term of Tiny Fingers, by a specialist DMS teacher. In Year 4 and 5, our children receive specialist Ukulele training from a member of Durham Music Service, for a term. |
Part B: Co-curricular music
Shotton Hall Primary School offers a diverse program of music tuition. Children in years 4, 5 and 6 are given the opportunity to study a variety of instruments, including violin, guitar, cello and brass. These sessions are taught weekly by qualified music teachers provided by Durham Music Service. Costs are attached to the program, with subsidised lessons for pupil premium eligible pupils.
KS2 are offered weekly choir rehearsals during lunchtime, which is ran by a member of school staff. Choir is free to all children and offers the ability to attend competitions and other external experiences. A fantastic working relationship with Durham Music Service ensures that all musicians within Shotton Hall Primary School are exposed to frequent events, but internally and externally. |
Part C: Musical experiences
Shotton Hall Primary School are extremely proud of the musical experiences provided to our children. Children take part in weekly singing assemblies, with the opportunity to learn a diverse range of music and songs. During termly class assemblies, children perform songs to parents/guardians.
In Autumn 2 term, our children experience a variety of Christmas performances. EYFS children rehearse and perform a nativity, both for KS1 children and parents/guardians. Year 1 and 2 children produce a Christmas Performance which involves our children singing, dancing and acting. This performance is shown to KS2 children and parents/guardians. In KS2, all classes produce a Christmas Sing-Along for parents/guardians. Alongside this, all of our children attend a performance delivered by our local music hub and are encouraged to join in with singing. Throughout the year, the KS2 choir perform for both KS1 and KS2 children during assembly, sharing their progress. The choir take part in the yearly Primary School Choir of the Year competition, which includes a visit to Ushaw College. All members of the choir attend this event, with transport and entry subsidised by the school. Summer term is full of musical experiences, with the production of ‘Shotton Hall Live’. SHLive is an event that involves all children within our school, who learn a diverse range of songs and perform them for both each other and to parents/guardians. The event is held outside and children are encouraged to share the school grounds with their adults. Durham Music Service provide an end of year Rock Concert for our children, increasing exposure to different genres of music. Our Year 6 children work extremely hard to produce an end of year production. This is performed to children in KS2 and over two separate days to parents/guardians. |
In the future
