Welcome to Class 11
Welcome to Class 11! Class 11 is a Year 5 class. Our teacher is Miss Metcalfe and our teaching assistant is Mrs Smith. Two simple rules underpin everything we do in Class 11: Be Kind and Work Hard. We love reading, are curious about the world and are always polite and respectful. This year, as many of our Science and Geography topics are environmental, the charity we have chosen to support is The Rainforest Alliance
Autumn
In the Autumn term we will be studying Ancient Egypt in History. Egypt will also provide the context for our Art and Design lessons: we will be making canopic jars and a scale working model of a shaduf. Class 11 also has the very important and serious job of delivering a Remembrance Assembly to the whole school and invited veterans. In English, we will be reading and performing the narrative poem The Highwayman. Our class novels this term will be Holes by Louis Sacher and Foxlight by Katya Balen.
Spring
In Spring, much of our work will be centred around World War 2. We’ll be reading Carrie’s War as our class novel and learning about how men, women and children experienced the war differently. We will even make and taste some WW2 recipes using rationed ingredients! In Spring we will visit Durham Cathedral to learn more about the Northern Saints and we will find out about Earth and the Solar System in Science. In Geography we will learn about the seas and oceans, why they are important and why they should be protected.
Summer
In Summer we will be reading the beautiful novel, Sky Hawk and learning all about birds of prey. We spend a day paddle-boarding in Seaham Harbour. In History, children will become historians and interview parents and grandparents to learn about how leisure and entertainment have changed over the years. In art we will learn about the artist Paul Cezanne and create our ownstill life paintings. In Design and Technology, we will learn how to sew and design and make our own phone case.
Homework and Reading: In Year 5, children will get two pieces of homework each week: one maths, one English (usually grammar). It will be sent home every Friday and is due in the following Thursday. Homework should be brought back into class, rather than be uploaded to Class Dojo. We mark the homework together, as a class, every Friday.
We expect children to read a minimum of three times per week. Reading Diaries are provided free of charge. They should be returned along with homework every Thursday
