Welcome to Class 3!
This is a Year 1 class. Our teacher is Miss Elwick and Mrs Britcliffe is our teaching assistant. We are going to have an exciting year together, with lots of interesting new topics to learn about!
Autumn
During our first term together we will begin by exploring our five senses during our science lessons, moving on to investigating what happens when the seasons change. We’re going to learn about the countries and capitals of the UK and identify some of our important landmarks. In our art lessons we will be developing our drawing skills, using nature as our inspiration. We will find out how toys and games have changed through the years, comparing what we play with today with the toys of our grandparents and we will be designing and making our own puppets.
Spring
Our Science work during the Spring term will focus on naming and describing materials, while we discover why they can be useful for different purposes. This knowledge will then help us design and make our own lunch containers during our DT lessons. In our history topic we shall learn facts about the Great Fire of London and compare this with the Great Fire of Newcastle and Gateshead. During our art lessons we will explore colour mixing and look at paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. We’re also going to be using maps to identify hot and cold parts of the world and discover what it is like in these places.
Summer
During our final term in Year 1, we will be identifying and sorting plants and animals based on their features. We will be investigating different types of weather and will help record daily changes in the weather we experience. We will find out about different religious celebrations as part of our RE work and we will discover some of the different Kings and Queens that have reigned in Britain over the years. Our art lessons will focus on the work of Kandinsky and we will use his art to inspire us to make our own artwork, while our DT lessons will help us develop the skills to make some picnic food!
